Identifying Different types of mold

There are thousands of types of mold in the environment, and mold growth is a common problem in Florida homes. You may first suspect mold when your home develops a musty smell. Mold is a fungus that grows in moist, warm areas, such as around pipes, windows, roofs, or in air ducts.

Effects of Mold on Health

Mold colonies in the home can lead to a range of health issues and is suspected to be linked to the development of asthma. People with allergies are most likely to suffer adverse health conditions when exposed to mold spores in the indoor air. The spores can trigger a range of symptoms, including:

  • Chronic cough
  • Trouble breathing
  • Respiratory illnesses
  • Headaches, migraines
  • Rashes
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Brain fog

Effects of Mold on Health

Some people are more sensitive to mold than others. Scientific research has established that mold spores can trigger allergy and asthma symptoms, but a more extensive list of symptoms has also been associated with exposure to mold. Mold sensitivity is a chronic, non-allergic reaction to mold, with a set of symptoms. The symptoms include anxiety, depression, insomnia, reduced cognitive function, and various types of physical pain.

Penicillium/Aspergillus

The most common type of mold found in the indoor air, penicillium/aspergillus grows in damp areas of the home, and can trigger an allergic response in some people,

Cladosporium

An allergen, Cladosporium is a common mold that is known to have a negative impact on health by triggering allergies and asthma in some people.

Chaetomium

This mold is commonly found in soil, air, dung, and develops in any material that contains cellulose, such as drywall, fabric, and paper. This variety of mold can cause infections, and may be first noticed by its strong, musty odor.

Stachybotrys

Stachybotrys is a family of mold that is naturally present in the environment. When out of doors, the mold works to decay organic matter. One subgroup of this family grows indoors, and once established, the colony can grow exponentially in drywall, ceiling tiles, wallpaper, insulation, and any paper products. One particularly dangerous member of the family is Stachybotrys Chartarum, or black mold.

Stachybotrys Chartarum

Stachybotrys Chartarum is typically called “black mold,” and is greenish-black in color. It grows on any home surface that is high in cellulose content, including drywall, crawl spaces, within walls, on drywall, sheetrock, and other building materials. If you have water damage, a leaky pipe, condensation, or flooding, you are at risk of this mold establishing colonies in your home. It poses a serious risk to human health, and is associated with a range of conditions, including hypersensitivity (allergic reactions), respiratory, dermatological, eye, and other symptoms from exposure.

Acremonium

About 150 distinct species of Acremonium have been identified. A positive force when growing out of doors, Acremonium mold growth in the home can bring about health conditions, and can cause skin problems, or enter the body through cuts and scrapes. These types of molds have been identified as the source of post-surgical infections in hospitals.

Alternaria

Alternaria mold is a collection of almost 300 types. The spores from the mold spread through the air, settling in water or oil. While predominantly found out of doors, Alternaria colonies can be established on tiles, drywall, plywood, paint, and polyurethane surfaces, typically in dark, moist areas.

Fusarium

Fusarium mold grows on food, or any home area that has sustained water damage from a storm, flood, or leaky pipe or drain. This mold can make you ill and is especially dangerous for any person with a weakened immune system.

Aureobasidium

Aureobasidium is a common household mold, found in moist, damp, humid areas such as a bathroom, kitchen, windows, tile, caulking, in textiles, and in air conditioning units. It is pink or black in color and darkens as it ages. The spores are airborne, and spread throughout the home when released, triggering hay fever, asthma attacks, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, dermatitis, and other infections.
